Situated at the heart of Victoria's spectacular Great Ocean Road close to Apollo Bay we are fortunate at Alpaca Marengo to combine a great lifestyle with an operation breeding animals for luxury black fibre.

We are the largest alpaca stud in south-western Victoria to specialise in breeding animals with lustrous, fine, gorgeous, black fleece. Check the 'What's On' button at left to find out about some of our activities and the latest news.

Why Black Alpacas?

Alpacas are one of the very few livestock animals which can produce a jet black fibre entirely naturally, without the need to use dyes. Of course, alpaca fleece comes in a very wide range of natural colours, from pure white through all shades of fawn, browns and greys, to black. Generally, white and the lighter fawns are the colours most favoured (and the most highly developed) because they adapt most readily to commercial processing and dyeing.

However, there is always a market for fibre which is truly black in today’s fashion world, and we are aiming to produce the very best in black luxury fibre.
